Three Nervous System Hacks we can learn from Dogs
Not only are our four-legged companions the most comforting and loving beings on this planet, but they can teach us many things.
Here are three nervous system regulation tips that we can learn from our dogs:
The Shake Off:
Have you noticed that dogs have a good shake after barking at a potential “threat”? This is to release stress hormones that are no longer needed once they realise they are safe.
Next time you jump off a stressful zoom meeting, battle intense traffic, or have an argument, shake off and release those stress hormones that served a purpose but you no longer need.
The Sippy Breath:
As your dog starts to get ready for bed, notice how they get comfy, take a deep natural breath in, followed by a “top-up” inhale (like sipping in a bit more air), and they then release a long exhale as they melt into their bed. This is what’s called The Sippy Breath technique, a science-backed breathing method that calms your nervous system.
Try it before bed, or throughout your day to help you regulate your nervous system.
The Guilt-free Nap:
If you’ve got a cheeky pup, you very well know their guilty look. But do you ever see them look guilty after a nap? Never.
Napping helps activate their parasympathetic (rest & digest) nervous system, inviting calm.
Next time you feel distressed, or have had a cry and feel sleepy, allow yourself to have a nap…guilt-free. It is the easiest way to reset your nervous system.
And if you forget all of these tips, simply remind yourself of the two most important lessons our dogs teach us: Live in the Moment and Love Deeply.
Much love,
Andrea
